On Wednesday, May 17, 2006, Sun's Open Source Community is building a Freedom Toaster for Khayelitsha township in South Africa.
Sun is donating three Sun Ultra(TM) 20 Workstations powered by AMD Opteron(TM) processors to power a Freedom Toasters for Khayelitsha and other locations in South Africa.
The first system will be built at JavaOne 2006 Java Development conference in San Francisco and will include free versions of the Solaris(TM) 10 Operating System (OS), OpenSolaris(TM) distributions and Linux operating systems, compilers, Java(TM) development tools, and several Java technology-based free and open source software applications packaged for the first time for delivery worldwide through Freedom Toasters.
"Sun's donation of workstations and engineering effort is evidence of our commitment to the Participation Age and bridging the digital divide, especially through participation in free and open source software communities," said Simon Phipps, Sun's Chief Open Source Officer. "Sun's Ultra 20 Workstations powered by AMD Opteron processors provide blazing x64 performance, allowing Freedom Toaster users to smoothly navigate the application and easily burn CDs of the free and open source software they need."
