DVD Burn Problems - Expensive (and time consuming) frisbees

Hi

To save time I tried to burn some DVD compilations on the toaster, yesterday (2 November 2006 about 13:00). The writers seem to be faulty, because the burn would start but then abort almost immediately. Initally I thought it was a media problem (Samsung Pleomax DVD-R 8X), so I bought some other make (Dysan DVD+R 1-8X) and had the same problem.

I then reverted to CD's, but almost half of the CD's I used aborted as well. Towards the end of the session I could not get a single CD to burn properly, and eventually gave up with only some of the disks I needed.

Ordinarily, I would have rebooted my home PC (suspecting the OS had gone unstable), but did not feel cutting the power on the toaster.

Please can you check this out for me and get the toaster DVD burn ready?

Which machine?

Which Freedom Toaster did you visit? The one at Gateway? We recently took a roadtrip to visit all the machines and do a status check, as well as apply the updates. Let me know and I'll chat to the maintainer.

I didn't know there was a toaster at Gateway!

Hi

I was only aware of one toaster in KZN, at the University library. Perhaps your 'find a toaster' section needs an update; cos if there is a toaster at Gateway there is no mention of it in this website......

So obviously therefore, I had trouble at the machine at The University of KZN library......

Troublesome DVD's were Samsung Pleomax DVD-R 8X, and Dysan (forget which type). I have had good success with my home burner with the Samsung disks: perfect, no problems. Perhaps the burners in the toaster need firmware upgrades? If there are compatibility issues, perhaps it would be a good idea to maintain a list of "certified" DVD media on the website that the burner is known to be compatible with.

Thanks!
